Nashville Proposes a New Transit Vision with 'Choose How You Move' Plan

Community Support: The initiative is backed by Nashville Organized for Action and Hope (NOAH), emphasizing the need for practical transit improvements over grander past proposals.
Key Features: The plan includes expanding major bus routes, upgrading dangerous intersections, constructing 86 miles of new sidewalks, and enhancing access to reduced or free public transit fares.
Funding Strategy: Estimated at $3.1 billion, the project seeks funding through a modest sales tax increase, allowing Nashville to leverage federal funds which are soon expiring.

Nashville Debates Extended Hours for Pedal Taverns Amid Downtown Traffic Concerns
(Photo courtesy of WZYT - Fox 17)
Public Hearing on Pedal Carriages: Nashville held a public hearing to discuss a proposal allowing pedal carriages to operate between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, currently restricted to accommodate evening rush hour traffic.
Proposal Details: The proposal impacts four pedal tavern companies in Nashville, which together operate 26 carriages. It aims to standardize the operating times of pedal carriages with those of party buses, which are already permitted during these hours.
Route Regulations: Routes for the pedal carriages would be submitted by the companies for approval but would exclude major thoroughfares like Broadway to avoid congestion. The Transportation Licensing Committee would oversee the approval of these routes.
Community Opposition: The Nashville Downtown Partnership opposed the change, citing survey results where a significant majority of downtown residents and workers expressed that their experiences were negatively impacted by the congestion caused by such entertainment traffic.
Decision Postponed: The Transportation Licensing Committee deferred the vote to a later date to allow time for further input from industry professionals and to review proposed routes and revised regulations.
