Kidsville Family Festival Returns to Nashville's Centennial Park

Nashville Through the Ages: From Ancient Settlements to Modern Metropolis

  • Prehistoric Roots: The earliest known settlers in Nashville arrived around 13,000 BC during the Paleoindian period. The area was later home to the Middle Cumberland Mississippian culture, known for its unique burial practices, artistic style, and ceramic styles, flourishing around AD 1000.

  • European Exploration and Settlement: The first Europeans in the region were French fur traders in the late 1600s, with trading posts established near present-day Nashville. The area became known as French Lick because of its natural salt licks which attracted animals and, consequently, Native American hunters.

  • Founding of Fort Nashborough: In 1779, pioneers from North Carolina established Fort Nashborough, which was later renamed Nashville. The city was officially incorporated by the North Carolina legislature in 1784.

  • Capital of Tennessee: After Tennessee became a state in 1796, Nashville was named the state capital in 1843. It quickly grew into a major commercial and cultural center.

  • Civil War Impact: Nashville was a strategic location during the Civil War, occupied by Union troops in 1862. The Battle of Nashville in 1864 was a significant Union victory.

  • Post-Civil War Development: Post-war, Nashville expanded as a center for education and music, particularly country music. Institutions like Fisk University were central to education and civil rights.

  • Civil Rights Movement: In the 1950s and 1960s, Nashville was a key site for the Civil Rights Movement, with significant events like the Nashville sit-ins in 1960 at the forefront of desegregating public spaces.

  • Tourism and Economy: Recent years have seen Nashville emerge as a major tourist destination and economic powerhouse in the South, bolstered by events like hosting the 2019 NFL Draft and significant investments in the local economy.

  • Historical Preservation and Legacy: Ongoing efforts aim to preserve Nashville's rich historical legacy, from its prehistoric origins to its significant role in American history, ensuring its heritage is celebrated and recognized.
