AT&T Southeast Ends Longest Telecom Strike in the Region

Strike Resolution: After 30 days, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) reached a tentative agreement with AT&T Southeast, concluding the longest strike in the telecommunication region’s history.
Affected Workers: The agreement impacts 17,000 workers, including technicians and customer service representatives in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Workers returned to their jobs on Monday following the deal.
Key Contract Terms: The five-year agreement includes a 19.33% wage increase, with an additional 3% for wire technicians and utility operations. Healthcare costs will remain stable for the first year, decrease in years two and three, and rise in the final two years of the contract.
Support for Workers: AT&T employees in Tennessee, who had been picketing in downtown Nashville, received support from local politicians, including House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Ray Clemmons.
Union Solidarity: CWA leaders praised the bargaining team for securing significant wage increases and healthcare benefits, attributing the success to the solidarity of members who walked the picket lines.
West Coast Agreement: A similar tentative agreement was reached for 8,500 workers in California and Nevada. Both agreements will undergo ratification votes before being finalized.

Tennessee Sheriffs Unite to Combat Rising School Threats
Statewide Response: The Tennessee Sheriff's Association issued a rare joint statement, with all sheriffs across the state vowing to take aggressive action against school threats following more than a dozen incidents this fall.
Serious Consequences: Law enforcement, led by sheriffs like Coffee County's Chad Partin, emphasized that those making threats will face arrest and prosecution, with juvenile offenders no longer receiving lenient treatment like in the past. Instead, they may face detention and house arrest for Class E felony charges.
New Measures: Authorities are employing more advanced tracking methods to catch those responsible for threats, warning that while it may not be immediate, they will be apprehended within hours.
Disruptions and Costs: School threats not only cause fear but also disrupt education and drain law enforcement resources. Overtime costs for investigators are rising, and lawmakers are considering holding parents financially accountable for the cost of investigations.

Parking Challenges: Wedgewood-Houston residents continue to struggle with limited parking as Nashville's population grows, further exacerbated by ongoing construction projects.
Proposed Development: Real estate developer Material Ventures introduced a mixed-use project at Hagan and Chestnut Streets during a community meeting, which will include new residential and retail spaces along with innovative parking solutions.
Underground Parking: The proposed plan includes underground parking for both residents and visitors, designed to preserve the pedestrian experience and reduce the visual impact of large parking structures.
Community Feedback: Residents expressed hope for affordable or free parking to support local businesses, with some emphasizing the need for better signage to highlight available parking.
Timeline: The project design is expected to be submitted for city approval by early 2025, with potential groundbreaking in 2026. Further details are awaited.
